Tips to Handle Water Damage Before Help Arrives

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

If you experience a water damage in your home, our SERVPRO of Richmond and SERVPRO of Henrico team is there for you at a drop of a hat. We understand the stress and sometimes, panic that is involved in these types of situations, and we will respond 24/7 to help. However, we realize you may not feel comfortable just sitting waiting for our team to arrive, so here are some tips you can do to get the process started:

  • Find and shut off the water valve at the source if applicable to the water damage
  • Remove and soak up excess or standing water by mopping and laying down towels
  • DO NOT use a regular vacuum to remove water.
  • Prop up and/or remove wet upholstery and cushions and place against walls for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to help stop the water damage from affecting furniture
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting and flooring and place in a dry location
  • DO NOT turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
  • Collect important papers. Pick up any loose paper items like books, magazines or other colored items on wet surfaces to avoid bleeding.

Although we hope you never have to deal with a water damage emergency, we hope these tips help while you wait for help to arrive. Remember to call SERVPRO of Richmond and SERVPRO of Henrico 24/7 at 804-740-6151.
